song analysis:

Maroon 5 ft Wiz khalifah- Payphone is a good music video because from the begining of the music video a clear genre of love and action is created, as the fist base track begins with the action shown to have already occurred, which suggest that the action will then demonstrated throughout the entire music video or the music video would demonstrate the aftermath of the action. However when the song begins and the beat drops a gradual storyline follows which appears to be good, as it gets right into action as the armed men run into the bank, causing drama. This is then clear to the audience that music video will show the action which was witnessed in the beginning of the music video. Throughout the music video we can guess that the structure in what this music video is following is amplification as the chorus of the song refers to a 'payphone' which is shown in the music video as he sing into the phone. The editing is also generally fast especially through cruicial moments of actions such as the shooting at the bank, the escaping and the cars on motorway. Also wth the match cut shot of the car spining and blowing up in the air.

Chris Brown- Don't judge me, the reason why I like this music video is because the lyrics of the song  have no correlation to what the music video is about as the music video seems to follow the music video of disjuncture. As the lyrics of the song talk about a relationship and not wanting t be judged by the other if she loves and trusts him where as the music video shows his journey into flying and exploding into space. The only and major editing used us towards the ending when he is the spaceship as the jump cut shows the movement of the spaceship as it appears to be shown as if the camera was jerking, also the editing at this moment becomes a lot faster as it differs through different shot the previous basetracks.

costume:

For our singer, we decided that she would need a variety of costumes- for different parts of the song and different locations.

Costume 1: black dress with tights and black heels
This costume would be used for one of the main base tracks and used mainly for the location of the canaal.

Costume 2: Blazer with a black skirt
This costume would also be used for one of the base tracks in the location of the park.

Costume 3: Jeans and a jacket
This costume is the casual costume which would be used to differ from the base tracks as it the costume which would be used to show the flasblacks.

Costume 4: Casual wear, jeans, jacket, scarf and gloves
This costume was used mainly for the end of our music video for the bridge and when they saw each other again.

We thought that the use of our different costumes suited the genre of our song and it is also a clear way to define the different base tracks within our song. To me the costumes also proved to suit our artist as we wanted to convey to our chosen audience that she is a new breaking solo female artist, and the use of these sophiscated outfits portray her self confidence and independance which would inspire to our target audience of young girls and womens.

Using Green Screen

Green Screen

In our video we do not have any scenes where we really need to green screen. However as a group we came up with an idea to merge two scenes together. To do this we were told we would need to use the green screen.

First thoughts...

Overall it was a day well spent on location because when we arrived on set we all just came out with so many ideas that we just could not leave until we got all of them on our memory card, but i am really pleased that we decided to stay on location for all that time because now we have a real variety of shots to choose from when it comes to the final edit.

We did encounter a number of problems on our filming day such as the fact that we were sure of how to get to the park which was Victoria park, but when we realized that it was so far away we decided that it would be best if we went to a park that was a little closer such as drayton park, i am glad we made tat decision because the park we ended up in was twice as good as Victoria park and it had better scenery for us to use in our music video.

Filming day 1...

Location: Regents Canal

Location: Park

The shots you can see above are from our first day of filming, on this particular day we travelled to two locations so that we could get the most out of the day and get the best possible shots so that we could then put them in our music video, We really had a lot of fun filming on this day because we were all really exited to get out there and start this project.

We did spend quite a lot of time walking around the locations trying to find the best places where we could then set the equipment up and start filming, it was important to us that we chose a place with really nice scenery as our backdrop because with the type of song that we are making the video for it would just look wrong if we filmed down at bric lane in front of all the graffiti walls.

Personal Clothing

Clothing

Tomorrow we are going to be filming our base tracks on the video. We are going to be travelling to Regents Canal and Highbury Fields. As the weather was told to be quite windy and cloudy, there is a big fear that it will rain. Therefore we need to revert to our risk assessment. We need to make sure that we take an umbrella with us to make sure none of the technical equipment gets damaged.

Location 3

Locations

Our last location is London Bridge. We were thinking that because it is a busy area it will be perfect for our last shots, as that is were the couple in the music video meet again.
This location is very suitable for our music video and I believe it will make our music video more immersing.

Location 2

Locations

Our other location that we have chose is Regents Canal.  I think that he atmosphere and Mise-en-scene will relate to our music video and that the shots we take in Regents Canal i believe will be very effective and relate to the mood of the song.

Male Costume

The clothes on you see below is what I am going to
use for the filming at Victoria Park, As I feel that it suits the environment
and it is pretty casual for a date.
White T- Shirt
Grey Cardigan

Dark Blue Jeans

Costume

Costume

We have chosen to use a black dress for our female actor as we feel that it suits the song and portrays a serious and emotional look, which i think we need to portray in our music video. So we have come to the conclusion that this dress is very suitable.

Also I think that she should where a black furred coat in some scenes which our next to the sea. This is because I believe the fur shows that she misses that warmth she had whilst in a relationship. And again the the colour of the coat to represent her emotions.

Location 1

Locations

We have chosen to film in Victoria Park as the park as very nice views and we believe we can take good shots there which will add to our music video. As you can see in the picture on the left and down below the location is a place were many people in relationships go to have 'picnics' too. so I believe this park is relevant to our music video.

Monday 22 October 2012

Location:

The main place which we have chosen to film majority of our music video is in Victoria Park, the reason why we chose this park is because we thought that there are variety of nice places within the park to use to take many of our shots and to use for a variety of base tracks. We thought that this park would be ideal as we could use it as 2 locations for our music video as we chose to structre our song to filming the verses of the song in the park and the chorous of the song by the canaal. So we thought choosing to film in Victoria park is a suited location as it is a park with a canaal. The reason why why we choose these locations to film our music video is because we thought that these calm locations reflected positive and calming thoughts which reflected the tone and the mood of the song. Also because the time of the year it is, the autumn cold miserable weather would also be reflected through the music video.

The feedback given to me was quite positive which i was pleased about.
However, I was given a few tasks to do which would really boost myself
in blogging and also to give me a wider understanding of my current project.

- Put up Queens video + analyse. This is the music video i had done in AS to help me in A2
- Analyse a previous music video. This should help me with the current video i am making/

Costume

Costume / Costume Ideas

As our video has a very emotional feel to it, we are planning on having dark colors in our video. For different base tracks we are going to have different costumes. Below are different outfits that we may use as an idea for our costumes.

Above is a dress we are planning on going with for main chorus of our track. We believe the color really goes with the feel of the song. As the song is not really as 'fun' song, we know using many colors goes against the emotional feel.

Above is clothing we are thinking of going with that our artists is going to be wearing in our flash back scenes. As the weather is going to be cold we believe it relates to the song as warm.

Inspiration

Inspiration

This video i believe is really good in the way its laid out. The storyline of the video is really good. Also as because the video is in black and white it adds a really emotional feel to the video. I want our video to be like this as our song has a similar feel and flow to this song. Also effects used in the video such as time laps. Also fades and slow motion are also used regularly during the video which adds a more overall effect to the video.

Location

Locations Of Where We Are Going To Be Filming:

We are planning to do most of the base tracks in different parts of 'Victoria Park' which is located on the borough of Tower Hamlets. We chose this location as it has some very nice places where shots would look good. Also because getting there is no problem for anyone in our group.

We are also planning on filming around Regents Canal. This is because we believe the atmosphere and environment really relate to our song choice and mood of the song.

Task 26: Reflection on progress

I feel that my blog so far is really strong because last year I didn't use nearly enough media on my blog which really let the standard of the blog down, but this year I have tried to use a different type of media in every single blog, I have also been trying to write in more detail in my posts to try and get as much information out that I possibly could.

We are going to to start filming soon and so far I am really excited about it, I think we are all really determined to get a good grade in media so we are all putting in a lot of effort into making sure that our music video is the best that it could be, We have spent a lot of time on planning this music video so that when it comes round to filming we will all know exactly what we need to bring and exactly what we need to get out of the day.

Feedback on pitch...

Overall i feel that the pitch as a whole went really well, we put a lot of effort into making sure that every detail was planned to perfection because we really want to get the most out of this opportunity and we want to make the best music video that we possibly could by making sure that every member of the group knows exactly what they are doing where we are filming and what props we need to bring to get the most out of our day,

After our pitch there were some criticisms regarding the choice of location because we originally thought that it would be a good idea to film in finsbury park and then on the following day we could go down to regents canal. But then after listening to the criticisms from our teachers we decided that it would be more beneficial to film at victoria park because reagents canal passes right past it, this means that we will be able to film both locations on the same day.

Final Costume...

These are the final costumes that we are planning to use in our music video, because we thought that it would match the mood of the song if our artist was wearing a black dress then it will look really good because we need to make the colour scheme match the tone of the song because if we use really vibrant colours then it will make it look really unrealistic and fake.

We will also be using casual clothes when we are filing the flashbacks because we don't want to make it look really boring by using the same costumes or locations throughout the whole video. We need to make the video appealing to the audience because they are the ones who will watch the video and by the album from our artist.

Feedback On Blog

The feedback on my blog I believe was quite good. There was no negative feedback however the amount of blogs I do daily should be increased. I was told i am on the path to having a really nice blog. My teacher actually told me to not write as much as i do. This may not be a negative thing about my blogging, however i believe that what i write is all relevant to the blog.

Three Action Points For Improvement:

- Do More Blogs Daily
- Write Less (According to teacher)
- Do A Lot of Extra Work relating to our blogs.

Effects...

The effects that we use are really important in a music video because you need to keep your audience engaged and you will do this by making your music video look cool by putting effects such as slides, split screen or even the black and white effect which is what we are planning to use in our music video, we will also be using certain aspects of the green screen which we will be using to cut the performers body out and place her over one of the flashbacks so it looks like she is looking back into her own past and remembering what used to be.

You can see from the images on the left that Adele always puts her heart and soul into all of her performances, in our music video we will be trying to echo this because we have a very similar piece of music and it is really inspirational so we will try a get that across to our target audience.

When it comes to the effects used in this particular music video by Adele you can see that the main one is of course the black and white effect that is used throughout the whole music video, In our music video we will also be doing this to match it with the mood of the song

More Inspiration...

The Script - Breakeven

You can see above the music video of breakeven from the script, the reason we have selected this to take inspiration from is because it uses a great deal of flashbacks of the couple acting in a romantic manner, this is something that we will try and do in our music video as well because we think that it is important to tell a story throughout the whole music video to keep the audience engaged with the music video and they can connect with the artists more.

When we look at the effects of the music video you can see that they also use the black and white effect to match the mood of the songs, they also manipulate the lights when it goes to the flashbacks there is a bright light in the corner of the screen to let the audience differentiate between the flashbacks and the artists singing, this is important because if the audience cant realise that it is a flashback then there is no point in filming it.

Core Inspiration...

Adele - Someone like you

When it came from taking inspiration for our music video, adele was the artist that we all had in mind, the reason for this is that Adele is the most similar to Emile Sande and she shares the same genre, and if you watch the music video above you you will and hear straight away what kind of performer Adele is because she does not need any backing dancers or extras on set, it is all about the voice and it will be the exact same with our performer.

When it comes to looking at the effects used you can see straight away that a black and white effect has been used throughout the whole music video, the reason is because it matches the mood of the song really well. In our music video we will use some of the techniques you can see here in the music video, for example we will be using a black and white effect in our video to match the mood which will then make the audience be able to connect with the artist more.

Anamatic

Our Anamatic / Storyboard

Final Location...

You can see from the above image that we are planning to travel to victoria park to shoot our main base track for our music video. The reason that we have chosen to film in victoria park is because we felt that the mood of the song will look really good with the park as the backdrop. If it is a really dark and cold day then that will be brilliant because it again will contrast nicely with our song.

When it comes down to getting there, it might be a bit hard considering we will need to get a train and then a bus to get there, but i feel that the awkward journey will be worth it because at the end of the day we need to put the effort in to get a brilliant outcome.

Regents Canal

You can see above all the images of the locations that we are planning to film in, we will be using a black and white effect over all the scenes to make it match the mood of the song, because we have chosen to do a really slow inspirational song so we will do our best to match the scenes that we shoot with the song that we play over them.

''Pop stars are, to some extent, symbolic vehicles with which young women understand themselves more fully, even if by doing so they partly shape their personalities to fit the stars' alleged preferences'' - Paul Willis, 1990

In this quote, Paul Willis is explaining how young women see pop stars more as a life role model than instead of just liking the songs. He is explaining how the stars lifestyle would make the young women alter the way they are living and make changes to be like the star. This could mean changing their hairstyle, clothing, attitude, however by doing so it could make things worse for the woman as things may change in other peoples attitude towards them.

(Above is an image that relates to this matter. These are images of young women changing their look to look like their favorite singer Nicki Minaj.)

I however disagree with the writers point of view. This is because i myself listen to music and really enjoy it however would not change or shape my personality to an artists way of living. Also i know many young women that really love listening to Pop Songs and they only listen as they enjoy the music. It is not necessarily always that a female would shape themselves to a stars image. I believe that only happens on rare occasions.

Ideas For Music Video

Ideas For Music Video

As a group today we focused on how are music video is going to look and what feel we want to be in the video. As we our doing Emeli Sande - Read all about it,  we want the audience to connect to the song visually and by listening. We are planning on mainly filming in a park however have different base tracks in different places around the park itself. As we are trying to implicate a sense of relationships in the video we decided we are going to embed flashbacks into the video. We are going to try have the flash backs and also a normal shot of the artists be simultaneously showing on the screen.

Also an idea was to film on the middle path of London Bridge. We wanted to do the ending chorus here as the lyrics are about just the random public and every human. We also wanted to time laps this scene so the cars going both ways are moving really fast as the artists is singing her verse in normal speed. However this is simply an idea and will need a lot of planning and re-thinking about as many health and safety issues have been raised.

Task 18: Music videos that have influenced my ideas

Music videos that have influenced my ideas

'The A Team' By Ed Sheeran
I really like certain parts of this video, especially from 1:47 to 2:05. In this part editing is used and the video speeds up. I believe this is very effective and makes the perfomer stand out from the crowd.
I would actually consider using something similar to this editing in my music video.

'Breakeven' By The Script
I really like the way the music video reflects to the lyrics by using flashbacks. Because my music video is about a relationship also, i'm thinking to use flashbacks to reflect how the artist feels and to show what they are saying.
'When I'm Gone' By Eminem
The structure to the music video is amazing, i love the way his explaining his story to people as his having flashbacks at the same time, also most camera angles are close up, i think this is done so that we can connect with the perfomer and feel there pain. I am really inspired by this music video.

Task 17: Oringal video of our song choice

There is no music video to Emeli Sande's Read all about it part 3, The video above is the original video to ' read all about it'. Our video will be different to this one, first we will have no male rapper just one solo female singer. And also our story line will be different to the video above, our music video will not be about a boy's relationship with his father. It will possibly be about our solo singer and flashbacks that happen to express to the audience her pain and to relate to the meaningful lyrics. Further more our basetracks our going to be absolutely different, as we would set our video near canals and rivers, parks, waterfalls, bridges etc, so our video is going to be reflected around nature.

Task 16: Letter requesting copyright

                                                  Letter requesting copyright

Task 15: Final song choice

The song the we have chosen to do a music video to is 'Read all about it part 3' by Emily Sande.

We have chosen this song as we believe that we can do a music video relevant to the lyrics. Also because the song is slow and meaningful, me and my group instantly thought of different ideas adn came with loads of pitches to each other of how we can portray the song as a music video. To add on the song is quite slow so it would be quite easy for our performer to lip-sync the song. In addition the song is from the Soul Genre.

:Audience

“Pop stars are, to some extent, symbolic vehicles with which young women understand themselves more fully, even if by doing so they partly shape their personalities to fit the stars’ alleged preferences” (Paul Willis 1990)

This quote to me shows that Willis believes that Pop stars are created in a way in which young women feel connected to the pop stars, as they believe that the pop stars reflects emotions and ways in which they are feeling or have felt before . This is achieved through Pop stars lyrics, songs and even music videos. By doing this the target audience feel more of a connection between them and the artist, which cause them to feel inspired as the pop star may also influence the way in which they think or deal with current situations. This then benefits the pop star as the have restrained a committed fan which will continue to listen and support this pop star in the further.

I personally disagree with Willis on this quote as a young woman, as I can think of no pop stars that I feel “symbolic” with in the charts today. I understand his point but I believe that pop stars don’t encourage the way in which young women relate themselves too. I would say that young women probably feel more pressured in some respects to compare with the pop stars as many younger girls may feel the pressure to look similar to them by hairstyles, fashion style and body shape.  However I don’t find this a negative thing either as it also may appeal to the target audience as they may want to copy the image of the pop star which causes another way in which an artist may sustain a fan.

State Of The Music Industry

 State Of The Music Industry

In today's class we discussed the state of the music industry and the ways that it has changed throughout the years :

- We realized that a majority of people in the class do not pay for music and mainly turn to  online downloads.

- As people download music illegally it is creating many financial problems for record labels and artists. This means they have to come up alternative ways in making more money.

- Artists now are signing 360 degree deals. This is something new that artists such as 'Jay-Z' and 'Madonna' have signed. It involves merchandising, clothes ranges, headphones and perfume deals and many other things.

Advanced portfolio: Audience.

This is our portfolio of our idea of our target audience.
We also created a facebook profile for her.

< Here are some of the facebook pages that we thought that our character would appeal to. The character we choose suits the psychograpic profile of a mainstreamer as she tends to keep up with the latest gadgets and fashion trends because she likes to follow fashion rather than standing out from the crowd. She's is also a working women who is able to fiance her money well and is able to live comfortably without living in debt, being able to afford expensive such as a car and a iphone. The reason why this character is  a target audience to our music video is because we feel that she can connect with the artist as the artist is singing about a feeling and emotion which she can relate too.

Task 24: Costume

Foe our costume you can see above that there are a number of black dresses, the reason that i have chosen these as costume ideas is because they match the mood of the music video really well, because it is a really sad song and we need to be using colours that will go with the mood of the music video, Because if we chose really bright vibrant colours then it would completely ruin the realism of the music video.

Task 23: Location

Optional Locations

You can see above just some of the locations that we will be filming at when we start the production of our music video, some of our locations will include Regents Canal, Victoria Park and our studio. The reason we have chosen to use these locations to film our base tracks is because we have chosen a really emotional song and as soon as we listened to it we knew we wanted to film it there.

Also it is really important that not only do the locations need to be right for the genre of music but they need to look good as well because we want people to like our video and if it was set in a really dark alley way then it would just look really bad.

Task 22: Audiance

Our core audience will be young teenage girls because the track that we have chosen is quite inspirational which means I think that it will appeal to young teenage girls aged 14-18, The reason that we have chosen such a specific audience is because we feel that they will be able to connect with the artist more than anyone else, We feel that young teenage girls will be able to identify with both the lyrics and the emotions. I really like the way that this video makes you feel, it has moments where you feel really sad for the artist and then when it gets to the chorus it makes you feel happy because it is like the artist has overcome her fears. That is why we have chosen a young target audience because we feel they will be more inspired by this music and the song.
Our wider audience is women of all ages because we feel that it inspires them all to live life to the full and grab every opportunity that comes their way,  I really like that there are a mix of emotions in this particular music video, In our own music video we will be trying to use the same technique of telling a story of the artist by using flashbacks to inform the audience about what the artist has gone through, but at the same time we will have the artist singing so the audience can see the emotion on her face.

Tuesday 2 October 2012

Task 21: Initial thought for our music video

In the lesson today we were brainstorming our first thoughts for what we wanted to put into our music video, in particular we were talking about costume and location which are the most important feature of any music video because the main thing that you need to do with the music video is to make it look good which is why for location we have chosen to use regents canal as the backdrop for our music video, we also thought that it would look good if we chose a really nice park as well because we feel that both of these locations will go really well with the tone of the song.

In terms of costumes we thought that it would be a good idea to use dark clothing because the soundtrack that we have chosen is really emotional so we feel that it wouldn't be appropriate if we were to use really bright vibrant colours. It is really important in music videos that you make it look believable which means that if it is a sad song then you need to make the accompanying video around the song.

Overall we are all really exited about the concepts that we have come up with, the last thing that we discussed in the lesson was the idea that we should have some kind of story throughout the video because it is a sad song which meant that straight away we all thought of some really good ideas. We all said that it would be good if we told a story of a couple who broke up and we were telling the story of this women who had finally broken free from this loveless relationship.

Task 14: Short-list of potential songs

Short list on potential songs for our music video

  1.  Emile Sande - Read all about it part 3
  2. Cold play - paradise
  3. Professor green- Jungle
  4. Cold play - Viva la vida
  5. Ed sheereen - The A team
  6. Gary jules - Mad World

Cold Play

Task 11: Re-edited version of last years music video

Task 10: Skills audit

My researching since the AS year has developed and gave me a better understanding on the industry. In the AS while we was planning out our thriller we concentrated on researching good settings and then came to a conclusion that most people will film thrillers outdoors so we done the opposite which I believe made our thriller stand out. Also whilst making the thrillers one of the main focuses was Mise en scene to convey that genre. It feels as if there are more areas you need to look in whilst doing your planning and research in A2 Media. in music videos I think that the most important thing is the Mise en scene which plays the biggest role in functioning a music video. I have also developed my skills because before picking a song or even coming up with idea's for scenery firstly I look at it from an audiences perspective. I believe that my researching skills have developed, especially when picking a song for my music video, i want to make sure it ws a really popular song nor had a official music video to it so that me and my group can use or imaginations to make a first. but if our song was to have an official music video, our music videos would have been compared to one another.
