Carol Venallis

Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis was all about and studied the camera work and editing in music videos. She realised that the editing used in music videos are used much more in quick succession in music videos than in films.

Below are the main points she believed that are done in music
videos:

1.    Carol realised how edits are really obvious in music videos. This means how in music videos they may use edits such as dissolves and wipes to draw attention to the next scene in the video.

2.     She realised how the normal rules on ‘continuity’ are also broken to again attract attention to what is seen on the screen.

3.     She realised how jump cuts are often used in music videos. This can be to speed up the movement of the video and to also show a various amount of time change.

4.     The camera would move in time with the music, this adds almost visual and feeling to the music video. Again helping you to feel the music and not just hear.

5.     A base track is used a lot, and repeated in various places throughout the track, to help give the video a structure.

Examples:

Professor Green – Read all about it Ft Emeli Sande;

In this the base track of Professor Green standing in front of the large doors is frequently used throughout the whole video. Also the parts in where Emeli is singing whilst sitting down is used throughout the video again giving a visual sense of the lyrics.

Gracious K – Migraine Skank;

Below is an image of an edit. The edit helps give us a sense of change in place and it then cuts to another scene. This helps draw attention to the video and adds an enjoyable scene to the video. Also in this video there are scenes in which the camera moves with the music in the video.
