Andrew Goodwin feels that traditional music videos don't
really follow the structure that they do in the film industry, for example in
movies we normally see a structure such as normality - problem - resolution,
but in music videos it is different because you can have any type of structure
from good to bad and the lyrics don't have to connect with the lyrics either.
He believes that the pop videos that we see today are built
around the songs and often the mood of the songs mean that you cannot use the
traditional structure, he also states that the pop video uses the artist as the
narrator and as a character in the video, the singer also looks directly at the
camera to make their audience feel a part of the video.
Pop videos rely on repetition, they consist of a number of
base tracks that are then chopped up and place to appear in time with the beat
of the song, normally the shots repeat themselves in the way that shots repeat
their choruses and lines. Andrew states that all music video have to have an
ending, they will either build up to a climax or have a constant repetition
before fading away.
