Andrew Godwin:
Andrew Godwin believes that there are 3 main types of relations between
songs and videos. These are illustration, amplification and disjuncture. Each
of these portray different meaning to a song, controlling how a audience
percieves the music video. Illustration is
usually shown through performance as performance is used to express the emotion
and mood of the song. Amplification
is the most common type used, as it tells the storyline behind the lyrics,
possibly giving the song a deeper meaning without contradicting the lyrics.
Finally Disjuncture is when the video has
no or little relation to the lyrics,
possibly creating a new, different feeling towards the song.
Above is Cheryl Cole music video- Call my name, this video is an example of Andrews Godwins theory of suiting an illustration music video structure as the video shows a musical performance of dance to sho her happiness and love.
Above is Eminem ft Rihannah- love the way you lie music video is an exmaple of what an amplification structure of a music video shows, as the music video shows a couple painful relationship. The video also shows a reflection to Eminem's and Rihannah's lyrics for example "Wait, where you going? I'm leaving you, no, you ain't" the music video shows this as you can see the man in the music video askes the girl as he grabs her shoulder violently.
Above is Lady Gaga music video to bad romance, the music video is clearly a video structure to disjuncture as the music video has no correlation to the song tittle or the lyrics, this is similar to many other Lady gaga songs.
